Glossary
Vessel’s own words, explained.
- Bidden →
A Vessel following a work order, keeping a stall or a bench while no consciousness moves it. Brackenholm’s people are Bidden.
- Brackenholm →
The peaceful place where your first Vessel wakes. It gives you room to learn, practise and prepare before leaving for the wilderness.
- Consciousness →
You, beyond any particular body. Your consciousness lives through a Vessel, while each Vessel has its own skills, belongings and history.
- Drawn →
A hand holding its equipped item ready for use. Drawing or stowing your hands changes the actions available to you.
- Dreaming →
A Vessel whose consciousness has stepped away but is still close. It waits where it was left and still answers those who hail it.
- Grimoire →
The view of magical workings and what your Vessel needs to cast them. A working is the game’s word for a spell.
- Hail →
Raising a free hand to someone you wish to speak with. A conversation begins when they acknowledge you.
- Labour →
An activity carried out through choices and stages. You read the situation, choose how to proceed and let each stage finish. Gathering and craft use labours rather than repeated swings.
- Main hand →
Your Vessel’s right hand. Its equipped item and selected action are separate from those of the off hand.
- Off hand →
Your Vessel’s left hand. It has its own equipped item and selected action.
- Pack →
The bag holding your carried belongings and supplies. Worn equipment is managed in the character view.
- Prayer station →
An altar where a Vessel can change skill training and selected actions.
- Reagents →
Materials used when casting magical workings. This guide does not list discoveries or tell you which hidden materials exist.
- Skills codex →
The view of a Vessel’s learned skills, their uses and the actions they can develop. A skill describes what the Vessel has learned; an action is something the Vessel does.
- Stamina →
A Vessel’s reserve for physical effort, including fighting, work and staying afloat.
- Stowed →
Putting a hand’s equipped item away. A stowed hand is free to interact with nearby things.
- Stranger →
Anyone whose name you have not been told. A Vessel may refuse to give its name, and then it stays a stranger to you.
- Veilgate →
A passage that carries a Vessel to another place. Brackenholm’s Veilgate takes you beyond the island.
- Vessel →
A body through which you live and act, with its own skills, belongings and history. Your consciousness can inhabit different Vessels, one at a time.
- Woken →
A Vessel a consciousness has woken in and moves, as yours is. Other players’ Vessels are Woken too.
- Working →
A magical spell cast using mana and the required reagents. The grimoire is where you read about workings.
